- The mentee must work as an effective partner with the
mentor. They should prepare appropriately for communications
with their mentor by developing important skills, knowledge,
and abilities identified by the mentor.
- The mentee has to discuss their needs and objectives with
their mentor. This means that he or she has to look at their
own skills and abilities to identify areas that may need
work and share them with the mentor. The mentees must take
responsibility for their careers and goals; although they
will have the benefit of the mentor's guidance, they are
responsible for their own progress.
- The mentee must be receptive to feedback from the mentor
and look at the situation from the mentor's perspective.
The ability to recognize the validity of a more experienced
person's viewpoint is especially important in writing for
publication.
- The mentee must be willing to try new approaches and to
consider ways of organizing and presenting their material
that differ from the concepts that were in place when they
began the research.
- Periodically, each mentor and mentee should jointly assess
the progress of the relationship, letting each other know
when priorities need to be adjusted.
- A mentor/mentee relationship is established in relation
to a specified manuscript. The mentee must understand that
a mentor has no continuing commitment to the author with
respect to further manuscripts. Any extension to additional
studies is entirely at the discretion of the mentor.
